- Play for the right reasons. If you are playing with friends for oreos, then you don’t need to focus so much, but if you are looking for practice, then take the opportunity. Same applies to the table, play because you are looking to win and implement what you have learned. Playing out of desperation or when you are angry or nervous will not result in a positive outcome.

- Be vigilant of the table. You should take note of every card that is on the table. As a beginner, it may be hard, but this creates good playing habits. Study the possibilities for yourself and other players.

- Only play within your limits. This means both your skill limits and your financial limits. Don’t try to impress a girl by entering a tournament, you are going to lose. Play where you know you are equal with the other players.

- You don’t have to play every single hand dealt. Folding isn’t a crime! This is a common beginners mistake, thinking you must play everything dealt. You can often win more if you play less, and play smart.

- You shouldn’t play under the influence! If you are playing to win, whether at a tournament or with your friends, you should never play after a couple of drinks. This creates impulsive behavior, and like with any activity, it impairs your judgment.

- Bluffing isn’t the trademark of great players. This is a skill that must be learned, and works only on certain types of players. You shouldn’t bluff because you think it’s what professionals do.

- Don’t feel obligated to stay in the hand. If you’ve already bet money, you don’t have to see the hand through. It’s better to back out and save what money you have then to play it through and lose more.
